An illustration, lettering & typography show
in Calgary, Alberta

calgary has a rich history of western-style typography—from the old hand-painted signs peeling off the sides of our East Village buildings, to posters for local musicians. Internationally, there has been a resurgence of vintage (or at least vintage-looking) graphic design work, art projects, lettering and type design.

In Calgary we are perhaps too accustomed to our typographic history: we hardly think about it. Perhaps we are missing out on something that is right in front of us.

This website proposes a typography show in Calgary, taking place during the Centennial Calgary Stampede, that examines the history of western-looking type and lettering. And, more importantly, that brings inspiring contemporary work in the field into one place.

This will be the work of illustrators, lettering artists, typographers, type designers, and letterpress printers. And the Western Types show will reveal work that takes old forms and old technologies and puts them to meaningful use in contemporary practice.

Ultimately the goal is to delight and inspire Calgarians, and visitors to Calgary, while providing historic and contemporary context.
